Variations of Poker

Poker

There are many variations of the game of Poker. Most poker variations are played with at least five cards, but there are also more complicated versions. Three-card brag, for example, evolved from Primero, a gentleman’s game played during the American Revolution. It is still played today in the U.K. and occasionally, straight hands of five cards are used as the final showdown. However, poker is almost always played in a more complex version.

The object of the game is to have the best-ranking hand of cards. This is accomplished by betting until all other players are eliminated from the game. In the case of a draw, the pot is divided among all the players, with the highest-ranking hand winning. Similarly, a player with the worst-ranked hand can check in the later betting intervals. Depending on the rules of the game, the minimum hand required for a player to bet is four.

In addition, two-pair hands are not uncommon in poker. One pair consists of five cards of one rank and three of another rank. One pair is the lowest possible hand in poker, while a pair of aces is the highest possible hand. As a rule, five-pairs are always better than a straight flush. The highest unmatched card in a pair breaks a tie. The lowest pair is a pair of aces.
