The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker has many aspects of chance and skill, as players must deal with the cards dealt to them. The game of poker also involves the use of bluffs, ranges, and balancing of various hands. The player can learn more about the game of poker by reading a poker book or playing the game in a group.

The game of poker can be played with many different types of poker chips. Poker chips are used almost universally in poker games. At least 200 chips are needed for a game with seven or more players. The lowest value chip is the white chip. The next highest value chip is a red chip, which is worth five whites. The blue chip is worth ten or twenty-five whites, and the dark-colored chips are worth two, four, or five reds. In most poker games, players “buy in” to the game by purchasing chips. The price of the chips is usually the same as the amount of money the other players have.

To win, the player must have two pairs of cards. The higher pair wins. However, if more than one person has five identical cards, the higher one wins. In a tie, the higher-card of the pair is used to break the tie.
