The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game in which the highest hand wins. It has hundreds, perhaps thousands of variants. Some games involve bluffing and other strategic elements, but the basic objective is to make a winning hand of five cards.

Players each have two cards face-down and one face-up. When it is their turn to act, they must either call a bet (match or raise the amount put in by the player to their left) or fold. If they fold, they cannot see the other players’ hands and must discard their cards and not play them again until the next deal.

The game is played from a standard deck of 52 cards, with some variations using multiple packs or adding wild cards (Jokers). The cards are ranked in ascending order from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5. There are four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. A flush is a run of 5 consecutive cards in the same suit, such as J-8-5-3-2. When hands tie on rank, they break following the rules for High Card.

A good strategy is to read the other players, consider what kind of hands they may have and if you are in a position where another player might have a strong hand, bet at it. This forces weaker hands to fold and can result in a big pot. Observe experienced players to learn how they react in the heat of battle, and practice playing with other people to develop quick instincts.
